Recently, the documentary ‘extraordinary future: Chinese science stories you don't know’ has been airing weekly since June 23 on Youku, as well as on Discovery Channel. The documentary tells the story of dozens of China’s leading scientists in a new way, including Ou yangziyuan, Pan Jianwei, Pu Muming and Wang Yifang, to record the golden age of China’s science.

The film is co-produced by the UK Crosswalk Films company and directed by famous British science writer and documentary filmmaker Christopher Riley. He is a two-times winner of prestigious space science Arthur C. Clarke Award and a nomination for the best documentary of British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards. Riley has a doctorate in planetary science, records keenly and enthusiastically the stories of China’s scientists. The film is not only a record of exciting and ambitious scientific achievements, but also tells the story of China’s scientists’ persistence, failures, tears and dreams on the road of discovery. “I hope the audience will be proud of the achievements of China’s scientists and engineers acquired in the documentary and curious about how they have pushed the human intellectual forward position as far as possible in their lifetime.” Riley said: “In the short time I spent with China’s scientists, I was inspired by their determination to pursue their dreams. As I watch this documentary, I hope you do the same.”

In China today, there is wide acknowledgment that innovation will have to play a key role in the country's economic development. At the opening ceremony of China's 3rd International Import Expo, Chinese President Xi Jinping yet again stressed the importance of innovation.

Innovation is a buzzword in China, and numerous science and tech projects reflect the country's ambition in the sector. China takes pride in is the Chang'e-4 lunar probe that completed a soft landing on the far side of the Moon for the first time in human history. Homegrown tech now allows people to commute using shared bicycles, pay by scanning a QR code, shop through their smartphones, and travel on high-speed trains. Today, China produces more scientists than any other country. They are among the best on the planet, leading their fields in medicine, robotics, radio astronomy, high energy physics, quantum computing and cosmology. From reinventing food production, helping to feed almost 8 billion of us, to tackling the diseases of old age and building a more sustainable society, China is showing us the way. And from deep sea to deep space, they are at the vanguard of human exploration.

Wang Zhigang, Chinese Minister of Science and Technology, claimed that technological innovation is one of the tasks highly prioritized in China. Science and technology input is one important indicator to show a country's capability for technological innovation. In recent years, thanks to governmental, social, and enterprise investment, China has witnessed an increase of good outputs in technological innovation, which is proportional to the country's technology input.

China is accelerating the transformation of scientific and technological achievements into commerce, quoting an article from "The Economist": "At the present pace China's tech industry will be at parity with America's in 10-15 years."
