【市委办】Sustainable Development is a Sound Development and The Real Development is the Joint Development

     For a long time, global development has been a major issue of concern facing humanity, in this regard, China’ s wisdom, solutions, and strength can help give stronger impetus to the international community’ s joint response to development challenges, as best exemplified by the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and the Global Development Initiative (GDI).

     “With difficulties and challenges ahead, we can only lead a better life for all peoples and usher in a brighter future for humanity by resolutely fighting the epidemic with firm confidence and unity spirit, working together to promote development, and effectively implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”, Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and President of the People’ s Republic of China, said in his congratulatory message to the International Civil Society Solidarity Conference on the GDI on August 12.

     China’ s GDI, another major initiative proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping following the BRI, focuses on development and calls for caring about the special needs of developing countries. The initiative is a promising response to the severe challenges and new opportunities that have emerged facing global development, and also feasible accesses to expedite implementation of the 2030 Agenda by proposing eight key areas of cooperation.

     Great attraction empowered by China’ s successful experience. Over the past 70 years since the founding of the People’ s Republic of China, the Communist Party of China and the Chinese government have always stayed committed to poverty eradication, people’ s well-being, and common prosperity as primary goals, putting the people front and center as centerpieces. In particular, 770 million poverty-stricken rural populations have been lifted out of poverty under the leadership, a move that achieved the goal of poverty reduction set by the 2030 Agenda ten years ahead of schedule and boosted the world's confidence in poverty eradication.

     Strong appeal originates from China’ s broad-mindedness. As President Xi Jinping has emphasized in his New Year message, “we Chinese not only aspire for good living for ourselves, but also hope people in other parts of the world lead a decent life.” The China-proposed GDI, which aims to leave no country behind, narrow the North-South gap and eliminate inequalities within countries to reinvigorate international cooperation on common development, has been warmly received and strongly supported by the United Nations and nearly 100 nations since its launch last September.

     Solid implementation comes from China’ s pragmatic actions. Standing firm on its commitment to “strive to peak carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060”, China has formulated the Action Plan for Carbon Dioxide Peaking by 2030 and sped up the construction of the “1+N” policy system. In addition, the country has been actively engaged in international cooperation by advancing South-South cooperation and the BRI together.

     Looking ahead, the GDI is expected to play an institutional role in building a community of shared future for mankind. China’ s wisdom of “Sustainable Development is a Sound Development and The Real Development is the Joint Development” will surely open a new chapter of mutually beneficial cooperation among all countries in the world. We are ready to embrace a brighter future for humans together with firm confidence and determination to move forward.
