【市委办】 Belt and Road Initiative: To Embrace a Brighter Future

     The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) that comprises a Silk Road Economic Belt and a 21st century Maritime Silk Road, formerly known as One Belt One Road, is a major strategy initiated by General Secretary Xi Jinping in 2013 that seeks to connect countries, regions and continents via land and maritime networks with the aim of building the bond of economic cooperation and strengthening trade connectivity. In addition, it is committed to strengthening the coordination and connecting of national strategic development of participating countries on the basis of common interests in all aspects. Remarkable progresses have been made since the initiative was announced, with a large number of cooperation projects taking root, and over 150 countries and international organizations so far signing cooperation agreements under the initiative framework with the People’ s Republic of China (PRC). The BRI has provided new impetus for world economic growth, and made new contributions to improve the well-being of people’ s livelihoods.

     The key reason why the BRI already yielded fruitful results lies in its compliance with the trend of world and the realistic demand for cooperation among countries along the route. Currently, the world is in the midst of great development and changes. The world is witnessing the interests of all countries closely related, a stronger desire for a better life of people around the world, and the common interests featuring peace, development, cooperation and win-win situation pursued by all countries. Only by enhancing trust and strengthening cooperation can countries meet the challenges faced in the world. The BRI, which responds to this historical development trend, provides new platform for cooperation among countries. In addition, it is important to note that China fully considers and respects the development reality of each country with the goal of common development for all countries involved, provides assistance to developing countries and friendly neighbors within its capabilities, and sincerely aids developing countries to accelerate their development process. Since its reform and opening up, China has successfully lifted more than 700 million impoverished residents out of poverty under the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC), with no interference to other countries in the process. China’ s success in poverty alleviation has proven that the country is fully capable of being a builder and collaborator on the world stage. Many countries along the route had relatively backward development, poor infrastructure construction and low industrialization. The BRI, therefore, is seen by them as a historic opportunity for poverty alleviation and development. As China-initiated infrastructure projects and industrial investments extend to these countries, participating countries would obtain tangible benefits, for instance, China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) has contributed one-third of Pakistan’ s electricity supply and the Katana Water Supply Project in Sri Lanka has solved drinking water crisis faced by 45 local villages.

     China today is moving closer to the center of the world stage, and its significant international influence is being demonstrated through the construction of the BRI and other initiatives. There are reasons to believe that the further advancement of the BRI will make more contributions to a vibrant and prosperous world as well as a shared future for mankind.
